JUDY YATES, was born in McAlester, Okla. She started painting and selling her works at the age of eleven. She was enrolled in art classes from seventh grade through her junior year of high school. She studied pen and ink, charcoal, pastels, watercolors, oils and commercial art. Most of her work was impressionistic. Her senior year included a Vo-Tech class of Drafting and Design. Several standard homes were built using her blueprints.
After more than a decade of painting with oils on canvas, she discovered the art of acrylic on rock Judy still works with oils or acrylics on the traditional canvas, but the majority of her work is done on "broken" pieces of natural marble or granite. To achieve this distinctive, self-taught, style of fine detail and realism, 10 to 15 layers of paint is used. Her unique gift for incorporating the shape of the broken pieces, plus the grain in the marble, into each original painting, must be seen to be fully understand this new, but beautiful, art form. She has been painting PET PORTRAITS since 1979. Judy's paintings are displayed in homes in Japan, France, Germany, Alaska, as well as in thousands of homes in the continental United States.

HELPFUL TIPS FOR PHOTOGRAPHING YOUR PETS

Have everything set up and ready to go before posing your pet. Chances are Fido is not going to wait around for you to set up your camera equipment. Pets can be restless, so make sure you don’t miss a priceless moment because you were loading film into your camera.

Position yourself at the same level as your pet. Pet photos are most effective when the camera is close (but not too close!) and your pet is centered properly. Focus on your pet’s eyes as the center of your photo.

Be patient and have lots of film. It’s important to have plenty of time to take the perfect picture. By watching your pet carefully, you should be able to anticipate when a photo moment is about to occur, so be ready to start snapping at all times.

Good times to get adorable pictures are when your pet is sleeping or eating. After you’ve taken some pictures of your pet in dreamland, you might try nudging him awake and taking some pictures.  Have two people involved in the photographing. That way the photographer will be ready at a moment’s notice to snap a picture, while the other person can work on getting your pet to look adorable.

Finally, don’t expect perfect results from the first pictures you take. Pets are a hard subject to photograph well, so take several pictures and try many different backgrounds and angles to get the best photo of your pet.

You’ll be glad you did!
